Profile
Casa Palacio Siolim House is a 350 year old Heritage Hotel in Goa, built in 1675. It is a Palacio that dates from the earliest times of the Portuguese occupation of Goa, beautifully restored as a home which, now doubles as a private ten room heritage boutique hotel in Goa.
Surprisingly hidden from view behind a tall row of Ashoka trees, the house understates its stature as one of Goa’s most unique and oldest manor houses. There are very few examples of the aristocratic late 16th century ‘casa do sobrado’ style of Goa-Portuguese architecture remaining in North Goa. The manor once housed the governor to Macau, and a family of administrators that included a governor to Mozambique. We are classified a ‘Heritage’ Boutique Hotel in Goa by the Dept of Tourism, and situated in the quiet coastal village of Siolim, Goa. We are perfectly placed for the lovely beaches just to the north of Morjim, Ashwem, Arambol and Mandrem beaches and the action of the Candolim – Calangute – Baga – Anjuna beaches to the South.
As a unique Heritage boutique hotel in Goa, we operate with a sensitive philosophy to our village, its culture and our surroundings. One reviewer described us as ‘lacking artificiality’. Others describe us as ‘understated’ and ‘elegant’. We have received many great reviews about our boutique hotel, but we are not searching for that – what really counts for us is to make our guests truly enjoy their time in our boutique hotel in Goa.
Call us a boutique hotel, but we are still a home and a “non hotel”, unlike a hotel in many ways. We aim to expose guests to what Goa really is all about – an aromatic distillation of Indian and old European Portuguese cultures, through our family-oriented approach to hospitality. Goa is not experienced in the manicured lawns of a luxury hotel but rather from the close quarters of slow-paced village and country life. It is about deep unbroken traditions, amazing Goa heritage homes, delicious local cuisine based on a mix of indian spices and European influences. Finally it is about the friendliest people, and an open, tolerant and happy society. If you are looking for this, you may find it in and our heritage boutique hotel in Goa.
In 2001, Siolim House was a finalist for the UNESCO Heritage Prize, which considered its exceptional history and the work we did to restore this building. In 2009 we completed a second renovation to bring back more detail and more features to this heritage hotel in Goa.
We continue to receive accolades and awards, but our greatest pride and joy is when you, dear guest, are able to enjoy our hosputality and experience more than twenty five years of care we have put into this heart-felt project.

Siolim is situated about 7 km (4.3 mi) from Mapusa. It is located around Chapora River. There is a bridge over River Chapora, in place of the prior ferry. To Siolim’s north lies the quiet village of Oxel; green hillocks hedge it towards Assagao in the south and the east. Camurlim too lies to its east, and in the west flows the Chapora river with Morjim.
SIOLIM VILLAGE
The village of Siolim is situated to the extreme North-West point of the taluka of Bardez, on the left bank of the Chapora river. Siolim is also the last ‘bourgeois’ village in the north of Goa. After crossing the Chapora with the ferry the villages are simpler, more rustic. Siolim also provides the quickest escape to the unspoilt northern beaches, including Morjim, Mandrem and Arambol. It is vey easy to get to Siolim, which is only 10 minutes from Mapuça and about 30 from Panjim. If you are familiar with Goa, you can find a map on this site showing where it is exactly.
The village lives at a slow rhythm, according to the weather, the seasons and the harvests. Its slow paced life, once characterised as the way things were on the west coast still remains alive here. There may be a few noisy crossings and markets, but walk off the road into the fields and the hills and you will get to enjoy a taste of the real life of the place. A harvest in progress maybe, done the way it always was. A few fishermen waiting for the catch by the sluice gates. A carpet of fallen coconut palm leaves as you weave your way between the trunks.
There are very few temples here, as most of them were destroyed during Portuguese rule, and those that are were built recently. However there are some built into the forest and are worth a hike (you can see them on our map).
Siolim was one of the earliest places to come under the domination of the Portugese. Siolim is home to a major Church, St. Antony’s. The people believe that the church was the site for two miracles. You can see more information here. In fact the first church in Siolim was built as early as 1568, and was only the fifth church built by the missionaries of the Society of St. Francis of Assisi in Bardez. The first one was that of Reis-Magos built on the right bank of the Mandovi, and thereafter those of Candolim, Nagoa, Salvador do Mundo.
Siolim is home to a number of festivals, from the Feast of San Joao (saint John the Baptist) monsoon festival, during which a highlight is the boat festival organised in the rivulet just opposite Siolim House. Village youth course through the village with unique floral head-dresses to jump into wells (safely of course) to celebrate the festival and the villagers organise blessings to the local farmers and farms to ask for a plentiful harvest.
There is also the unique ‘Zagor’ festival that is celebrated by Hindus and Christians alike, at the end of January where the villagers organise an all night vigil. The festival starts at night and continues through the night, to pay obeisance to the local deity ‘zagorio‘. You will find more information
