The Story of Shimla

Shimla, also known as Simla, is the capital and the largest city of the State of Himachal Pradesh. From 1864 onwards, Shimla used to be the summer capital of British India owing to the high temperatures during Indian summers. After independence, the city first became the capital of the State of Punjab but was later named the capital of Himachal Pradesh after reorganisation of state borders and the break up of Punjab.

Shimla also hosted many important political meetings during the British Era, including the Shimla Accord of 1914 and Shimla Conference in 1945. Shimla was also the place where the historic Shimla Agreement took place after the 1971 war with Pakistan. The city’s name is derived from the name of Hindu goddess Shyamala Devi.
